How to Measure Your Head for the Perfect Hat Fit
A well-fitting hat is comfortable and stylish. It all starts with one simple step: measuring your head correctly.
- 1. What you need: A soft, flexible tape measure. No tape? A piece of string and a ruler will work.
- 2. Where to measure: Wrap the tape around the widest part of your head - about 1/8" above your eyebrows and ears.
- 3. How to measure: The tape should be snug, but not tight. Note the measurement in inches or centimeters.
- 4. Use our converter: Enter your measurement into our tool to find your size across all global standards.
Step-by-Step Guide
Follow these instructions carefully to get the most accurate measurement possible.
1. Prepare Your Tool
The best tool for the job is a soft sewing tape measure. If you don't have one, don't worry. Grab a non-stretchy piece of string, ribbon, or even a phone charging cable. You will also need a standard ruler or yardstick to measure the string against.
2. Position the Tape Correctly
Wrap the tape measure around your head. The key is to find the largest possible circumference. This is typically just above the middle of your forehead and about 1/8 inch (or a finger's width) above your ears. The tape should go straight around your head, not at an angle. Look in a mirror to ensure it's level.
3. Take the Measurement
Pull the tape so it is snug and firm, but not so tight that it digs into your skin. You are measuring for a comfortable fit, not a compression helmet! Read the point where the tape measure overlaps. If using a string, pinch the point where the end meets the rest of the string, then lay it flat against a ruler to find the length.
- Measuring too high or too low: Placing the tape on your brow line or too high on your forehead will give you an inaccurate, smaller reading.
- Pulling the tape too tightly: This is the most common mistake. It will result in buying a hat that is too small and uncomfortable.
- Using a stretchy tape measure: A metal, rigid tape measure is not flexible enough, and a stretchy one will give an incorrect reading. Always use a non-stretch, flexible tool.
